Les Reed has been associated with the forest
sector since the 1940’s. In the 1950’s he earned a BA in economics from Lewis
and Clark College, and an MA from the
University of Oregon. Half of his
career has been devoted to consulting in some 40 countries, specializing in
timber supply outlook studies, forest policy and strategic planning.
Reed has been an active participant in the
Lumber War since appearing before US Tariff Commission hearings on softwood in
1962. He ran the Canadian Forest
Service in Ottawa in 1980-83, and then joined the Faculty of Forestry at the
University of BC in a Chair of Forest Policy Research. In 1992 he resumed
international consulting.
Special appointments include the Royal Swedish Academy of Forestry, the governing board of the Commonwealth Forestry Association, the Prime Minister’s National Advisory Council on Science and Technology, and the Premier’s Wilderness Advisory Committee.
