B.Bruce Bare, PhD, Dean, College of Forest Resources, University of Washington, Seattle, WA
B. Bruce Bare, Professor of Forest Management and Quantitative Science and Adjunct Professor in the School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences, was named Dean of the College of Forest Resources in January, 2002, after having served as Acting Dean since May, 2001. In addition, he served as Director of the Center for Quantitative Science, an interdisciplinary unit dedicated to providing tools for mathematical and statistical analysis of biological, environmental and natural resources problems, from 1996 - 2002.
Professor Bare was born in South Bend, Indiana, and attended Purdue University, earning his bachelors and Ph.D. degrees there in 1964 and 1969, respectively, with his master’s degree awarded by the University of Minnesota in 1966. He joined the University of Washington faculty in 1969. He remains active in undergraduate and graduate teaching and in research.
His research focuses on the application of economic and management science tools to problems of forest land management. These problems run over various spatial and temporal scales and include both ecosystem management as well as traditional forest management paradigms. His study of timber valuation and taxation issues involves the study of various theories for appraising timber and timberlands under differing systems of taxation. He has integrated systems for planning, policy, and decision support into his research and course work, as well as very practical application in his role in strategic planning for the College of Forest Resources.
