China 's Global Role in Forest Products Markets Mme. Jiang Zehui , Professor of Wood Science and President of the Chinese Academy of Forestry, Beijing , China James A. (Jim) Shepherd , President and CEO, Canfor Corporation, Vancouver , BC , Canada Professor Jiang Zehui has had a distinguished career at all levels of wood science. She has been engaged for many years in forestry education and scientific research and management, especially in teaching and research in forest utilization and wood anatomy. She has been awarded 10 state and provincial prizes for scientific and technological advances. Presently she directs 15 master's students and 5 doctoral students. As the President of the Chinese Academy of Forestry, she established the International Network for Bamboo and Rattan (INBAR), the first international inter-governmental organization to be established in Beijing , China , and was elected Co-chair of the first Board of Trustees. Mme. Zehui has generated significant funding for research within the Chinese Academy of Forestry (with an academic and technical staff of 1,700), as well as for numerous universities. Jim Shepherd was named the President and Chief Executive Officer of Canfor Corporation in 2004 following Canfor's acquisition of Slocan Forest Products Ltd. At the time of the acquisition he was President and Chief Executive Officer of Slocan and prior to his appointment as CEO of Slocan he was President and Chief Operating Officer of Crestbrook Forest Industries Ltd. and President of Finlay Forest Industries Limited. Mr. Shepherd is a Management member of Canfor Corporation's Board of Directors. He received his Mechanical Engineering degree from Queen's University in Kingston , Ontario , Canada .

He has been President and Chief Executive Officer of TIMWOOD since June of 2001 and is currently Chairman of the Board. TIMWOOD AB has established itself over the past 20+ years as one of the leading consulting companies in the world focusing on the wood products industry. During his years as President and CEO of TIMWOOD AB Mr. Sandberg has participated in numerous consulting projects throughout the world involving a wide range of products, and TIMWOOD AB is currently working with several of the largest wood products companies in North America, Europe, and the Southern Hemisphere. TIMWOOD AB established a branch office in Seattle , WA , USA in 1995. Mr. Sandberg holds BA and MBA degrees from the University of Linköping . In 1996 he was elected a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Forest and Agriculture.

Doing Business in ChinaAmbassador Howard Balloch , President and Founding Partner, The Balloch Group, Beijing , China Howard Balloch , Founder and President of The Balloch Group, served for more than five years as Canada 's Ambassador to China at the conclusion of his 25-year governmental career. As Ambassador, he oversaw great expansion in bilateral relationship between Canada and China . He was instrumental in establishing and managing a series of initiatives to improve Canada 's profile in China , including three Prime Ministerial and "Team Canada " delegations. Prior to his appointment as Ambassador, he served as Deputy Secretary to the Cabinet for National Unity up through the 1995 Quebec Referendum, as Assistant Deputy Minister for Asia and the Prime Minister's Personal representative to APEC, as Head of the Policy Planning Staff during both the Gulf War and the dissolution of the Soviet Union, and as Director of North Asia during the late 1980s. He is currently President of the Canada-China Business Council. He serves on a number of corporate boards and is Adjunct Professor of International Business at the University of British Columbia . He received his BA and MA from McGill University , and continued his graduate studies at University of Toronto and at the Fondation Nationale de Sciences Politiques in Paris . |

Potter , Professor of Law and Director, Institute of Asian Research, University of British Columbia , Vancouver , BC , Canada . Pitman B. Potter is Director of the Institute of Asian Research at the University of British Columbia . He is also Professor of Law and Director of Chinese Legal Studies at UBC's Faculty of Law. Professor Potter received his BA in Chinese Studies (History) from George Washington University in 1978. He received his MA (1980) and Ph.D. (with distinction, 1986) in Political Science, as well as his law degree (JD, 1985) from the University of Washington . Prior to taking his appointment with the UBC Law Faculty, Dr. Potter practiced law full-time during 1985-1990, including a threeyear posting in Beijing . Dr. Potter's teaching and research are focused on PRC and Taiwan law and policy in the areas of foreign trade and investment, dispute resolution, intellectual property, contracts, business regulation, and human rights. In addition to his academic activities, Professor Potter is involved in arbitration work, and continues to advise governments and private companies on Chinese affairs. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Canada China Business Council and the Board of Trustees of the British Columbia International Commercial Arbitration Centre. |
